Designing Amsterdam’s Future Healthcare. A collaboration between Pakhuis de Zwijger, students from psychology, medicine and social studies of the University of Amsterdam and the Inter-Architecture department of the Rietveld Academie.
Healthcare faces many major challenges. The aging population, the impact of chronic diseases on people’s personal life, and the increasing technical opportunities to assist both patients and healthcare professionals. There is an urge to cut healthcare spending and to improve standards of care. Therefore, a new approach to these complex problems is important. In order to innovate healthcare practice, not only specialist knowledge of (future) healthcare professionals is required, but also skills such as creative thinking, ability to observe and empathy are of great importance. These are the skills that characterize (future) artists.
How to use cultural design to activate people with dementia to move more often? Or, how to use design to cope with loss in times of oblivion? Hacking Healthcare, an educational program by Pakhuis de Zwijger in collaboration with the University of Amsterdam and Gerrit Rietveld Academie, where students of medicine, psychology, social studies and Inter-Architecture were brought together to think of unconventional solutions to several concrete problems of Amsterdam’s (health)care institutions (Cordaan, Odensehuis, AMC, OLVG, GGZ ingest and ‘Studentenartsen’).

During this event students pitch their projects to a wider audience. With lectures by:
– Marlies Schrijven (AMC surgeon and serious gamer), who connects the creative industry to (health)care innovation
– Esther Vossen (curator of the artist-in-residence program of GGZ Altrecht), who uses art to reflect on the healthcare system
– Moderator: Michiel Hulshof (Tertium)
