Educational philosophy
By means of a spatial installation or intervention we research how architecture can influence people’s behaviour – and vice versa. How, for instance, can a space stimulate social interaction? In what way can space trigger and activate people?
Methodology
Designing a space and thus a spatial experience implicates taking up a social position. Does the design evoke a curious attitude, does it allow for multiple interpretations of its users? Is the user approached as a consumer or as an active participant who can actually influence the design? Students are being challenged to consider their own position in regard to the user of their designs.
Assignments
– 2011: TRANSIT SPACE design a meaningful spatial experience behind customs at an international airport
– 2012: INFOSPACE design a spatial experience which conveys implicit information such as physical phenomenon, a historical event or a personal memory
– 2013: REFUGE SPACE design a spatial experience which addresses the issue of “seeking refuge” in de Bijlmer
In order to reinforce the relevance of the assignment to society, we seek connections and collaborations with institutions and partners outside the Academy such as Schiphol Airport, CBK Amsterdam and Waag Society.
