For their free choice, students are given the opportunity to research and work out their own interests and questions. Students are at liberty to choose how and when to make use of their free choice. The free choice can be used to broaden and deepen knowledge and experience.

The free choices must be approved by the department head. They can consist of literature study or practical research – possibly in cooperation with the lectorate – or a joint project with another student from another programme at the Rietveld Academie. It is also possible to take a course at another academy or university, in which case students consult the department head, who will assess the quality of the course. The student will provide transparent and verifiable information.

The free choice programme is intended for first and second year students and serves as a prelude to the final year. It is possible to use the free choice program as a replacement for another program within the curiculum, instruction are not covered by the exchange program.
