MAKE A FOREST PROJECT: THE RESULTS

An overview of all the works in the Make A Forest Exhibition in Galerie Waalkens, Finsterwolde

Project 1 Gallery-in-Forestin Gallery
The original idea – to have the exhibition in the forest en to bring the forest inside the gallery – had to be interpreted in a creative manner, as the weather did not allow an exhebition in the open air. This is how the idea of a ‘gallery-in-the-forest-in-gallery was born. A friendly neighbour donated as much bricks as needed. A mini replica of the gallery was built, on the exact scale of 1:5. Cut down trees from the forest nearby were and fixed around the mini-gallery. The trunks were placed with a severe density, so the forest forces decides the path for the visitor. This way the forest has power of the humans, and not the other way around. Inside the min-gallery there is a mini-exhibition with miniature drawings that show the working process of the 4 day project.

Project 4: Shadow on the Floor

In order to bring the artificial tree on the wall to life was a shadow was needed. This was created on the floor with tape. After removal of the tape, a negative of the drawing emerged in the dirt on the floor. During the exhibition the shadow will fade out because of the footsteps of the visitors, and thus the life of the tree

Project 7: Foto’s & Projectie
The photos on the stairway represent a study of similarities between structures in the human body and trees. The result is shown on the first floor. The photos were taken in the woods right across from the Gallery, where trees are being cut down to make way for the cows. The film is projected onto the dens tree trunks made from the same idea.

Project 8: Food Design (at opening)
During the opening of the exhibition, food from the immediate area was prepared and served. The food was smoked on oak wood from the nearby forest. The food design experiment with apples, walnuts, and potatoes from the garden and surrounding area was received well.
