Can you transform a hospital waiting room into a space that informs patients about their illness? Or would a waiting room be able to offer recognition and consolation, for example by reserving a space for journals of fellow patients?

It’s important to us that designers can create not just beautiful spaces, but spaces that do good; spaces that have a positive meaning for humans.

Methodology

This subject has a social theme, which is highly topical. We work with assignments that are always connected to external stakeholders. These are urgent spatial design assignments that require an approach that is different to the one used up until now.

We approach the research and design investigations from within. In addition we seek a connection with existing scientific research in order to build on it using the formulated assignment, identifying practical applications of this research.

We go out to find the various agencies dealing with the issues involved, ask questions and find answers that lead to new insights.

In order to reinforce the relevance of the assignment to society, we seek connections and collaborations with institutions and partners outside the Academy, such as University of Amsterdam, VU University and the Odensehuis.

Assignments
– 2014: Hacking healthcare, collaboration with the University of Amsterdam, VU University and Inter-Architecture on 6 case studies
– 2013: The Dementia friendly neighbourhood (see insight series#7)
– 2012: The transformation of the ‘snoezel corridor’ (see insight series#5)

See also:
Insight Series #7.
