City Entrances for Amstelveen

Studio brief:
In this assignment you will study the spatial elements ‘entrance, exit, transition space, border, inclusion, exclusion’ based on an actual assignment.

When you enter Amstelveen on foot, by bicycle, car or public transport you don’t experience directly you’re entering the greenest municipality of the Randstad, or a city with a lot of sport clubs, unique museums or expats from around the world. The municipality of Amstelveen is planning to change this: new city entrances must be realized that show these unique values of Amstelveen. The municipality of Amstelveen is asking you to come up with a master plan including design proposals on different locations. They are planning to choose 4-6 designs and to realize them by 2025.

Together, as a group, you will work towards this master plan. You will work in duos and will all choose a location. Your location-specific design proposal has to fit in this master plan. By working on the master plan it is important to discuss the exact locations. Why does Amstelveen need an entrance on these locations? What are the qualities of a location? Who lives in the neighborhood? Which values of Amstelveen should be shown in which location? Other important questions are: Who should be using these new entrances? Do you want to relate to a neighborhood or only to the city? Should a new entrance be very visible or should it blend in with its surroundings?

You will present your masterplan and design proposals at the municipality of Amstelveen in January 2017. Also you will organize an exhibition at Museum Jan van der Togt
